Did you happen to notice the massive cell phone tower wedged between the stadium lights on the campus of South County Secondary School? If you didn't, that's the idea. The companies that own them would prefer that they blend in. If you think it's unusual for a cell phone to be on public property or on school property, it isn't. That doesn't mean it isn't controversial. For now, the tower at South County SS is the only one in Lorton-area schools. Erica Hendry, editor of the Vienna Patch has a detailed report.

Schools, Communities Go Wireless
Smartpoles provide increased coverage, neighbors raise safety concerns.
August 4, 2010 – Great Falls Connection
As cell phone voice usage declines and smartphones like iPhones, BlackBerrys and Droids become increasingly popular, the current cell phone coverage is struggling to keep up with increased data use. That’s where a company like Milestone Communications comes in, and as they help increase cell and Internet coverage, they can also help struggling public and private institutions.

According to the FCC, cell phone voice usage has been declining since 2007, while at the same time data consumption has risen and wireless networks have gotten almost six times faster.

“For the first time, consumers are driving the bus, and the providers are trying to play catch-up," said Milestone CEO Len Forkas. "People want to have information around them at all times. In the future, wireless communications are going to be utilities as important as power and water.”

Schools profit from new cell towers in Frederick
June 5, 2010 – Associated Press
Frederick, MD
A tree towering above the others near Frederick Community College is actually not a tree at all. It's a new cell phone tower disguised with artificial evergreen branches.

The 125-foot tower is located on a Frederick County Public Schools site, one of many being built on school properties.

The tower is owned by Milestone Communications of Reston, Va. Cell phone carriers such as T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon lease space from Milestone to improve their coverage in the area.

Milestone pays schools $30,000 up front when a new tower is built and then at least $1,000 a month from the revenue generated by the tower.

Towers have been built on Linganore and Urbana high schools' property as well as at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.
