Public-Private Wireless Partnership Safety from Milestone Communications


	Safety is of utmost concern at Milestone, especially as it relates to children and families near our Smartpole sites. Smartpoles are safe for our schools and our communities; however, we recognize that there may be a concern about Radio Frequency (RF) and its potential health effects. The American Cancer Society, FCC, World Health Organization, the United States Department of Labor, and the FDA have studied the effects of RF for years and have been unable to link them to any health risks.

Case Study

In 2006, a large public school system conducted an extensive test of all towers located at high school and administrative centers. The tests involved taking detailed readings from 30 different locations inside and outside each school/center with a device that measures radio frequencies.

The data was compiled, reviewed and shared with several well published experts on the topic before releasing the results of the study with the school board and posting on the school’s internet web the final results. Every site measured was 1,000 times lower than the FCC threshold. In fact, several additional school sites were selected randomly for testing and it was discovered that the sites with the highest amounts of radio frequencies were sites that did NOT have wireless towers, but sites that were near AM–FM and television transmission towers!

In the Winter of 2010, an independent test was performed on the original sites tested in 2006 to measure the RF from each tower to ensure compliance. The test confirmed that all of the towers remained well within the FCC safety threshold and the amount of radio frequencies emanating were roughly equivalent to the amount of RF from a wireless home router. Milestone continues to monitor the health safety of its tower sites as additional carriers are added to each tower to ensure that the towers built are operating well within the FCC’s standards.
